Friday, (21/6), SUAKA, Jakarta Legal Aid Institute supported by Dompet Dhuafa, initiate an event called “Refugee Rights Are Human Rights” on Jakarta Legal Aid Institute office. The event participated by approx 40 refugees of adult and children.
According to UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Indonesia annotation in January 2014, there are 3206 refugees and 7110 asylum seekers. Unfortunately, this condition not followed by Indonesian Government with 1951 refugee convention and protocol 1967 concerning refugee ratification. The condition, consequently causes refugee in Indonesia do not get enough protection. Even, if they get protection, it just independent protection that run by some institutions, refugee itself, Non-Government Organization who engaged in refugee issues and UNHCR. Commemoration of the International Refugee Day 2014 is so important for raising awareness and respect to Human Rights; also, as an action to socialize the importance of refugee protection and them presence.
The event filled with dancing, painting and singing lead by social worker for refugee. The painting works displayed on the wall that followed by explanation from children refugee in English or their national language that translated into English by translator. Besides that, the event also give chance for adult refugee who want consult about refugee issues in Jakarta Legal Aid Institute.
